The execution narrative was a popular genre in early modern England. New printing processes fed a public fascination with sensational eyewitness accounts of executions and transcriptions of felon's scaffold speeches. This eight-volume facsimile edition, the first of its kind, draws together a representative selection of texts to show the evolution of the genre from the late sixteenth century to the end of public execution in England nearly 300 years later. Part II covers the years 1778-1868 (Volumes 5 and 6), while the last two volumes contain commentaries on capital punishment from William Prynne, Gerrard Winstanley, Samuel Rossell, Basil Montagu, William Ewart, Charles Neate, Rev J W Watkin, Sheldon Amos, Robert Jermyn Cooper, and articles from Good Words, Howitt's Journal, Household Words, Punch, The Satirist, The Times and The Westminster Review.
